一、端午起源

The Duanwu Festival, also called the Dragon Boat Festival, is to commemorate the patriotic poet Qu Yuan.

端午節(jié)，又叫龍舟節(jié)，是為了紀念愛國詩人屈原。

Qu Yuan was a loyal and highly esteemed/respected minister, who brought peace and prosperity to the state but ended up drowning himself in a river as a result of being vilified.

屈原是一位忠誠和受人敬仰的大臣，他給帶來了和平和繁榮。但最后因為受到誹謗而最終投河自盡。

People got to the spot by boat and cast glutinous dumplings into the water, hoping that the fishes ate the dumplings instead of Qu Yuan’s body.

人們撐船到他自盡的地方，拋下粽子，希望魚兒吃粽子，不要吃屈原的身軀。

For thousands of years, the festival has been marked by glutinous dumplings and dragon boat races, especially in the southern provinces where there are many rivers and lakes.

幾千年來，端午節(jié)的特色在于吃粽子和賽龍舟，尤其是在一些河湖密布的南方省份。

二、吃在端午

Zongzi are pyramid-shaped dumplings made of glutinous rice, stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves.

粽子是金字塔形狀的糯米做的餃子，有不同的餡兒，包在竹葉里面。

It is said that people ate them in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). 

據說人們在春秋時期（公元前770-476年）吃過它們。

In early times, it was only glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in reed or other plant leaves and tied with colored thread, but now the fillings are more diversified, including jujube and bean paste, fresh meat, and ham and egg yolk.

早期的粽子只有用蘆葦或其他植物葉子包裹并用彩色線捆起來的粽子，但現(xiàn)在的餡料更加多樣化，包括大棗和豆沙、鮮肉、火腿和蛋黃

If time permits, people will soak glutinous rice, wash reed leaves and wrap up zongzi themselves.

There is an old saying “Drinking realgar wine drives diseases and evils away”.

Realgar wine is a Chinese alcoholic drink consisting of fermented cereals and powdered realgar.

雄黃酒是一種中國酒精飲料，由發(fā)酵谷物和雄黃粉組成。

In ancient times, people believed that realgar was an antidote for all poisons, and effective for killing insects and driving away evil spirits.

在古代，人們認為雄黃是所有毒藥的解毒劑，對殺蟲驅邪很有效。

So everyone would drink some realgar wine during the Dragon Boat Festival.

所以每個人都會在端午節(jié)喝些雄黃酒。

四、玩在端午

Dragon boat racing is an indispensable part of the festival, held all over the country.

賽龍舟是端午節(jié)不可或缺的一部分，在全國各地都有舉辦。

As the gun is fired, people will see racers in dragon-shaped canoes pulling the oars harmoniously and hurriedly, accompanied by rapid drums, speeding toward their destination.

當槍聲響起時，人們會看到劃著龍形船只的選手們整齊而又匆忙地劃著槳，伴隨著快速的鼓聲，向目的地飛馳。

Folk tales say the game originates from the activities of seeking Qu Yuan's body, but experts, after painstaking and meticulous research, conclude that dragon boat racing is a semi-religious, semi-entertaining program from the Warring States Period (475-221 BC).

民間傳說，龍舟游戲起源于尋找屈原身體的活動，但專家們經過艱苦細致的研究，得出結論，賽龍舟是戰(zhàn)國時期（公元前475年至公元前221年）的一個半宗教、半娛樂的節(jié)目。

In the following thousands of years, the game spread to Japan, Vietnam and Britain as well as China's Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Now dragon boat racing has developed into an aquatic sports item which features both Chinese tradition and modern sporting spirit.

In 1980, it was listed into the state sports competition programs and has since been held every year. The award is called "Qu Yuan Cup."

五、戴在端午

On Dragon Boat Festival, parents also need to dress their children up with a perfume pouch.

在端午節(jié)，父母會給孩子們戴上香包。

They first sew little bags with colorful silk cloth, then fill the bags with perfumes or herbal medicines, and finally string them with silk threads.

他們首先用彩色的綢布縫制成小包，然后在小包里裝上香料和草藥，最后用絲線將小包縫上。

The perfume pouch will be hung around the neck or tied to the front of a garment as an ornament.

香包被掛在孩子的脖子上或系在衣服的前面作為裝飾。

They are said to be able to ward off evil.
